Amputee may be in line for payout

news image A man who was forced to have his arm amputated as a result of a workplace accident may be in line to secure compensation.

According to the Hackney Gazette, Cafer Sonmez was cleaning a kebab meat-mixing machine in July 2004 when the incident occurred.

His right arm was crushed in the device and, despite undergoing emergency surgery, he eventually lost the limb.

During a heading at the high court in London, Judge Gareth Hawkesworth QC ruled that his employers, Kebabery Wholesale, were 80 per cent liable for Mr Sonmez's injuries.

In so doing, he paved the way for the 55-year-old to seek considerable compensation for the injuries he suffered.

Unless a settlement is reached in the meantime, the amount that he will receive will be decided at a further trial.

According to figures produced by the Health and Safety Executive, there were 136,771 non-fatal injuries sustained by workers in the UK in 2007-08.
