Brain damage victim secures payout of over £8m

news image A boy who suffered brain damage during his birth has been awarded a significant sum in compensation.

Tristian Blomfield, who was delivered at Watford General Hospital in May 2000, is set to receive a lump sum of £2.23 million, followed by annual payments of £42,000 to the age of 19, the BBC reports.

He will subsequently be given £105,000 each year for the rest of his life.

His legal team had claimed that Tristian suffered his brain injuries as a result of a failure of an anaesthetist to appropriately administer a spinal anaesthetic block.

The boy's mother had subsequently suffered a respiratory arrest, which led to complications concerning her son.

Now eight years old, he suffers from cerebral palsy - a condition which affects movement and coordination - and has a tremor and poor motor control.

After the compensation was awarded during a high court hearing, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust said it was pleased with the result and offered an unreserved apology.
