Firm fined after two workers die from preventable accidents
Two companies have been fined following the deaths of two employees in separate incidents.
JCB Earthmovers and JC Bamford Excavators, both within the JCB group - a construction and agricultural equipment manufacturing company - were fined £200,000 and £266,000 respectively as a result of the incidents.
The first occurred in November 2005 when a worker was testing the fuel tank of an earthmoving machine at JCB Earthmovers' manufacturing plant in Cheadle, Staffordshire.
He was standing close to the tank when the inspection plate blew off, causing him to sustain fatal head injuries.
The second accident, which took place in September 2006, involved a staff member at JC Bamford Excavators who was operating on the firm's site in Rocester, Staffordshire.
He also suffered fatal head injuries after being crushed by the boom of an excavating machine.
"Both these tragic deaths were not only regrettable but also entirely preventable," stated Health and Safety Executive inspector Lynne Boulton.
