Hysterectomy patient to sue over alleged hospital mistakes

news image A woman who underwent a hysterectomy is suing the hospital trust which conducted the procedure, accusing it of making mistakes.

Lynn McGuigan was admitted to James Cook University Hospital in April 2007 for an edometrial ablation - a technique sometimes referred to as "roller ball surgery" which involves the removal of part of the womb lining.

Three days after the procedure, she returned to the medical centre suffering from abdominal pain and was treated for septicaemia and a kidney infection, before being sent home.

However, the following day, the 36-year-old mother of two collapsed at her home and was sent for further tests.

Eventually, it was discovered that her womb had been perforated in two places during her initial operation.

Ms McGuigan then had to undergo a hysterectomy, which she claims may have been avoided if doctors had diagnosed her problem sooner.

A spokeswoman for South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust said she was not able to comment on the case for legal reasons.
