Injured cyclist wins £11k in compensation
A man who was injured when he hit a pavement while cycling has been awarded a payout of £11,000, it has been revealed.
Stuart Bullen sustained a fractured wrist and shoulder as a result of the incident, which took place in September 2005 in the Lancashire town of Penwortham on the south bank of the River Ribble.
The 60-year-old had been travelling along a cycle lane when the path in front of him veered into a raised kerb, the Lancashire Evening Post reports.
On the day the accident occurred, Lancashire County Council had adjusted the markings of part of the lane.
In a new development, Mr Bullen has been awarded compensation from the local authority.
Commenting on his victory, he said: "It was never about the money, it was just about the fact they had altered [the cycle path] and done it incorrectly."
John Oultram of Russell Jones & Walker, who represented Mr Bullen, said: "Lancashire county council has a duty to maintain safe cycle paths for cyclists and in this case that duty was not fulfilled.
"Mr Bullen's injuries have left him limited both in mobility and in his choice of leisure pursuits."
