NHS trust pays out over £22m in clinical negligence cases

news image An NHS trust has paid out more than £22 million over the past ten years over clinical negligence claims, it has been revealed.

Figures released by the Department of Health and cited in the Hull Daily Mail suggest that £22,883,513 was given in compensation to patients and their families by Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust during the period.

The money is paid out through the NHS Litigation Authority, which was created by the government in 1995.

Chief of the organisation Steve Walker, said: "The number of people making claims has remained fairly static.

"The amount of money has gone up because judicial inflation is much higher than normal inflation."

Most of the money paid out to victims in clinical negligence cases goes towards the anticipated cost of wages for staff who would be looking after patients who need care for the rest of their lives, the expert added.
