Semi-professional football player awarded £22k after building site injury
A semi-professional footballer who can no longer play after he sustained an injury while working on a building site has been awarded compensation of £22,500, the Star reports.
James Smith, who used to play football for Garforth Town, a Yorkshire club formed in 1964, was working for Century Reinforcement Services when the accident happened.
He was operating in a trench as a steel fixer when two bundles of metal bars fell from a JCB into the trench, trapping his ankle and causing it to break. Doctors subsequently operated on him to repair the break and to pin it.
Although initially Mr Smith thought he may be able to return to football, within two years his ankle broke again at the weak point caused by the original injury.
He stated: "I was off work for months but no amount of money can compensate for me not being able to play football."
