Woman wins payout after medical mistake
A woman has been awarded a payout after she gave birth to a baby despite having been fitted with a contraceptive implant.
Sarah Moss had the implant fitted in June 2006 at the Haydock Family Planning Clinic. However, staff at the medical centre had failed to insert it correctly.
Just over a year later, she was rushed into hospital suffering from stomach cramps and bleeding.
The 22-year-old subsequently went into labour and gave birth to a baby girl, who was 18 weeks premature.
Four-and-a-half hours later, the baby died.
St Helens Primary Care Trust (PCT), which serves a population of around 300,000 people, has now agreed to an undisclosed settlement.
Ms Moss said: "I wanted the PCT to make sure no one ever has to go through what I went through."
She added that it is "such a relief" that the case has now come to a conclusion and a settlement has been reached.
