MRSA

MRSA is a bacterium which is found on the surface of the skin.  It is normally only harmful to people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or sick, and usually affects those with an open wound or drip.  The most common place to suffer from MRSA infection is in hospital.

MRSA infection

There has been a lot of publicity about MRSA because the number of deaths from infection has been increasing.  It is treatable with certain drugs and some people make a full recovery.  But others are left with permanent scars or disability and about 1,000 people a year die.

The best way to prevent MRSA infection is to ensure strict hygiene standards in hospitals.  Wards should be regularly disinfected and all medical staff and visitors should wash their hands after every task.

Compensation for MRSA

If you or a loved one have been infected with MRSA in hospital, it may be possible to claim compensation.  However, MRSA claims don’t often succeed because it is difficult to prove a hospital was negligent and that this caused the MRSA infection.

As a result, many MRSA claims are now being made using the laws controlling harmful substances, rather than by trying to prove clinical negligence.
