Muscle / soft tissue injury

Soft tissue injuries affect joints and muscles and include sprains, strains, dislocations and bruising.  These are the most common type of personal injury and can be caused by, for example, road traffic accidents, slips and trips and sporting accidents.  If your soft tissue injury was caused by an accident that wasn’t your fault you may be entitled to compensation.

Sprains

A sprain is a stretch and/or tear of one or more ligaments (ligaments connect bones).  They can happen to any joint but are most common in the ankle.  Sprains will cause pain, swelling, bruising and loss of use of the joint.  Sprains often need to be immobilised in a plaster case.

Strains

A strain is caused by twisting or pulling a muscle and/or tendon (tendons connect muscles to bones).  They can be caused by a one-off incident or by long-term repetitive overuse.  The most common muscles that are strained are in the back or the hamstring (the back of the thigh).  Strains will cause pain, limited motion and muscle spasms or weakness.  They are usually less severe than sprains.

Dislocations and bruising

A dislocation is when a bone is dislodged from a joint.  These injuries are often very painful and can also damage nerves and blood vessels.  The symptoms are a sudden pain and a loss of movement as well as swelling and distortion of the joint.

Bruising is caused by damaged blood vessels bleeding under the skin, usually following a blow or knock to the body.
