Whiplash

Whiplash is usually caused by a car crash, when even a low-speed collision can make the head jolt violently.  It can also be caused by a blow to the head or through long-term repetitive damage to the neck, for example by cradling a telephone between your head and shoulder.

Causes and symptoms of whiplash

Whiplash is when a sudden movement or jolt to the body or head causes damage to the ligaments, tendons and muscles in the neck.  The seriousness of a whiplash injury can vary.  Symptoms include:

  • Pain, stiffness and loss of movement in the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms
  • Dizziness and blurred vision
  • Pain in the shoulders, arms or lower back
  • Tiredness and poor concentration.

Symptoms may take several hours to appear and may get worse in the days after the accident.
